● Explore the top five research-driven recommendations for establishing effective classroom practices in writing.
● Capture the vision for a school-wide writing program that focuses on essential standards-aligned writing skills, prioritizes time for instruction and practice, and provides effective feedback.
● Understand the multifaceted nature of teaching writing, including balancing foundational language skills, the expression of ideas, and ultimately writing about texts.
● Understand how to teach writing skills explicitly and systematically, using the gradual release of responsibility and a clear scope and sequence to foster consistent student growth.
● Learn practical strategies for teaching writing craft and composition with the research-based Six Traits framework, helping students to communicate their ideas with depth and clarity.
● Uncover time-saving strategies to integrate reading and writing instruction, reducing cognitive load and maximizing classroom efficiency.
● Learn how to build an effective writing program while remaining committed to other adopted literacy practices and programs.
Aligned with Indiana’s Academic Standards, this event will help instructional leaders gain evidence-based methods for building better writers at every level. Participants will leave energized and equipped to lead their teachers toward creating a cohesive, systematic writing program that produces real results.
Specific takeaways:
● Complete a self-assessment to evaluate your school or district’s current writing instructional practices.
● Receive a checklist of evidence-based actions needed to build a stronger, more cohesive writing program.
● Experiment with online tools to support student feedback and assessment.
● Develop a personalized list of actionable next steps to guide implementation and drive results.
A portion of this workshop is dedicated to highlighting how Smekens Education and HMH / Writable can support schools in implementing the science of writing through their respective services and solutions. The majority of the session will focus on non-commercial content, providing practical strategies and insights that educators can apply immediately.

Building a High Quality Preschool Program through Observation, Evaluation and Coaching: A Primer for Administrators and Coaches of Early Childhood Programs
Presented by Susan Bryant
What does a high-quality preschool program look like? What do impactful early childhood teachers do? What is the role of play in preschool? How can early learning be measured? Should my expectations be different for developmental preschool programs than for general education preschool programs?
These questions and more will be addressed in this full-day professional development session.
Although designed especially for administrators and coaches of early childhood programs who don’t have a strong personal background in early learning, this session will benefit any administrator or coach who is seeking to enhance the quality of their preschool program.
The session will explore practical approaches for observing children and teachers to gain a deeper understanding of developmental progress, classroom dynamics, and instructional quality. Participants will learn what to look for in walk-through visits in preschool classrooms, as well as effective strategies to assess, support, and improve teaching practices through observation, coaching, and evaluation, regardless of the instrument utilized by the school and district for teacher evaluation.
In addition, we will focus on coaching strategies to foster reflective practice, improve teacher-student interactions, and create a supportive environment for continuous professional growth. Administrators and coaches will leave the session equipped with actionable strategies to provide ongoing guidance and support for preschool educators, fostering a high-quality learning experience for young children.

The Writing Rope: Integrating Reading & Writing Instruction with Joan Sedita (K-12)
Reading and writing share the same cognitive processes and oral language base. This session presents an overview of The Writing Rope model for writing instruction (Sedita, 2019) and emphasizes the importance of integrating reading and writing instruction. The Writing Rope represents multiple components of writing instruction as strands in a rope: 1) Critical Thinking (generating ideas and information, stages of the writing process), 2) Syntax (syntactic awareness, sentence elaboration, punctuation), 3) Text Structure (narrative, informational, opinion; paragraph structure; patterns of organization, 4) Writing Craft (awareness of task, audience, purpose; word choice; literary devices, 5) Transcription (spelling and handwriting fluency). This framework will be compared with Scarborough's Reading Rope (2006). Details about each writing strand will be shared along with suggestions for how instruction for multiple skills and strategies support reading as well as writing ability. Joan will incorporate content from her Writing Rope book and her most recent book, Essentials of Adolescent Literacy. This PD Pop is free to all ESC Members and will NOT be recorded.

Trauma-Informed Practices Part 1
4.5 hours
In this workshop, you’ll truly understand what your most vulnerable students need. You’ll learn how these struggling learners’ brains work and how to create a classroom environment that is sensitive to the needs of all students, regardless of background. 46% of students under 7 have experienced a traumatic event. 26% of children under 4 have experienced a traumatic event. As educators, we care immensely about our students beyond the classroom. We worry about their safety and well-being once they walk out our doors. Students entering the classroom with emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues are often at a disadvantage and struggle to keep up with the demands of traditional learning. Brains affected by trauma require a different kind of instruction – and a special kind of care.
We will cover the following:
-
The impact of stress and trauma on learning
-
How to build a resilient classroom
-
Creating gritty learners
-
Neuroscience and brain-based learning strategies
-
Dealing with students from Traumatic backgrounds
-

Trauma-Informed Practices Part 2
4.5 hours
In the Trauma Level 1 training, we dove deep into brain research and understood how trauma affects the brain, which then affects behaviors. Then we equipped you with some essential tools to help your get started. Now, we want to give you new specific brain-based intervention strategies to give you the fools to lessen the negative impact of trauma in the brain and restore your classroom and school. This workshop gives educators and schools an action plan to prioritize the personal well-being of students to promote their academic success and achievement. When your students enter your classroom, they bring with them their hopes, dreams, worries and traumas. Childhood trauma greatly impacts your students’ ability to learn and engage in the classroom. By implementing trauma-informed practices through a classroom and school-wide approach, you can provide your students with the tools they need to thrive, achieve and succeed. Through exploration of research, collaboration with peers, and hands-on practice with classroom strategies, educators and administrators will gain in-depth understanding of trauma-informed care at school. Our training guides schools through such topics as social and emotional learning as a curriculum, positive behavior interventions, daily mindfulness practice in the classroom and strategies to model emotional and self-regulation skills.

Revolutionizing Climate and Culture for Schools
4 hours
As happiness researcher, Shawn Achor says, “Happiness is one of the greatest competitive advantages you can give a brain” …raising creativity, test scores and productivity, as well as buffering against stress, anxiety, and depression. In this workshop, Kim Strobel, and Steve Bollar dive deep into understanding the underlying issues that prevent you from being able to shift your district, school or even your life. They give you a specific blueprint for increasing staff and student engagement, strategies, and tools to begin to make “the shift” happen, as well as Social and Emotional Wellbeing practices that truly transforms your schools. School Climate is how a school “feels.” It’s the relationships, attitudes, and overall perception of the school. School culture is the shared values, rules, belief patterns, teaching and learning approaches, behaviors, and relationships among or across the individuals. Both are essential to maximizing working and learning environments that help all succeed
