Kick-Start Writing Instruction: Routines, Strategies & Stamina for grades K-5 Writers
Presented by Kristina Smekens, The Smekens Educational Solutions, Inc
Great writing instruction doesn’t happen by chance—it’s grounded in the science of writing and built through intentional routines, direct instruction, and strategic feedback from day one. This workshop equips grade K-5 English-language arts teachers with research-based strategies to develop confident, resilient writers while providing a step-by-step plan for launching writing instruction that fosters engagement and stamina from day one. What You’ll Learn: ● How to establish clear routines from day one so students stay engaged and build writing stamina—without constant teacher prompting. ● The three essential types of writing experiences, backed by research and state assessment rubrics. ● Why direct instruction is critical for growing writers—and how to deliver explicit mini-lessons in writing. ● Research-based feedback strategies that guide students toward self-revision instead of relying on the teacher. ● Practical ways to carve out time for writing in a packed literacy block. What You’ll Take Away: ● A step-by-step plan to kick-start genre-based writing instruction with momentum. ● A flexible framework for integrating writing with reading and language instruction. ● A clear understanding of the essential skills to prioritize in writing instruction, honoring the components of the 6 Traits of Writing and The Writing Rope. ● Strategies to help students persist through writing challenges instead of shutting down. ● A research-based approach that makes writing time more productive and stress free.

Hybrid Event- Presenter is virtual onsite team activities
Guardrails to Greenlights: A District Playbook for AI Policy and Planning
Presenter: Pete Just
District AI champions face the dual challenge of knowing when to hit the brakes and when to step on the gas. This workshop provides practical guidance on setting the right guardrails for safety, compliance, and trust - while also identifying the greenlights where districts can responsibly accelerate innovation.
We will build on the language and structure of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN)Generative AI Maturity Tool, Teach AI's AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit, and Digital Promise's AI Literacy Framework to help participants understand the “why” behind AI adoption and apply it to their own district’s operational and instructional realities.
This event is considered “hybrid.” You will join a room of school staff from districts across our region to engage in activities and discussions guided by an on-site facilitator. Meanwhile, the presenter will participate virtually, sharing their expertise and leading coordinated activities with multiple locations across Indiana. This format provides access to high-quality presenters who might not otherwise be available in person.
Agenda:
Through a mix of virtual spark sessions and on-site team activities, participants will:
Frame the why: connect AI to mission, student success, and operational excellence based on national best practice and frameworks.
Explore key guardrail areas: privacy, security, data governance, wellbeing and ethical use.
Identify greenlight opportunities in both the classroom and core operations (transportation, HR, finance, communications, facilities).
Work through tabletop scenarios that surface real-world risks, decisions, and opportunities.
Practice communication strategies to explain guardrails and greenlights clearly to staff, families, and boards.
The result for the day will be a practical playbook for the next mile: shared language, tested activities, and editable tools that district leaders can immediately use to guide conversations, set boundaries, and unlock opportunities.
What to Bring:
● Come alone or bring a small planning team
● A charged device
● Copies of Mission, Vision, Values, Strategic Plan, and/or district goals
Audience:
-
Technology Directors
-
District Administrators
-
Building Administrators
-
Instructional/Tech Coaches
-
District AI Champions / Team Leads

The Writing Rope: Integrating Reading & Writing Instruction with Joan Sedita (K-12)
Reading and writing share the same cognitive processes and oral language base. This session presents an overview of The Writing Rope model for writing instruction (Sedita, 2019) and emphasizes the importance of integrating reading and writing instruction. The Writing Rope represents multiple components of writing instruction as strands in a rope: 1) Critical Thinking (generating ideas and information, stages of the writing process), 2) Syntax (syntactic awareness, sentence elaboration, punctuation), 3) Text Structure (narrative, informational, opinion; paragraph structure; patterns of organization, 4) Writing Craft (awareness of task, audience, purpose; word choice; literary devices, 5) Transcription (spelling and handwriting fluency). This framework will be compared with Scarborough's Reading Rope (2006). Details about each writing strand will be shared along with suggestions for how instruction for multiple skills and strategies support reading as well as writing ability. Joan will incorporate content from her Writing Rope book and her most recent book, Essentials of Adolescent Literacy. This PD Pop is free to all ESC Members and will NOT be recorded.

Trauma-Informed Practices Part 1
4.5 hours
In this workshop, you’ll truly understand what your most vulnerable students need. You’ll learn how these struggling learners’ brains work and how to create a classroom environment that is sensitive to the needs of all students, regardless of background. 46% of students under 7 have experienced a traumatic event. 26% of children under 4 have experienced a traumatic event. As educators, we care immensely about our students beyond the classroom. We worry about their safety and well-being once they walk out our doors. Students entering the classroom with emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues are often at a disadvantage and struggle to keep up with the demands of traditional learning. Brains affected by trauma require a different kind of instruction – and a special kind of care.
We will cover the following:
-
The impact of stress and trauma on learning
-
How to build a resilient classroom
-
Creating gritty learners
-
Neuroscience and brain-based learning strategies
-
Dealing with students from Traumatic backgrounds
-

Trauma-Informed Practices Part 2
4.5 hours
In the Trauma Level 1 training, we dove deep into brain research and understood how trauma affects the brain, which then affects behaviors. Then we equipped you with some essential tools to help your get started. Now, we want to give you new specific brain-based intervention strategies to give you the fools to lessen the negative impact of trauma in the brain and restore your classroom and school. This workshop gives educators and schools an action plan to prioritize the personal well-being of students to promote their academic success and achievement. When your students enter your classroom, they bring with them their hopes, dreams, worries and traumas. Childhood trauma greatly impacts your students’ ability to learn and engage in the classroom. By implementing trauma-informed practices through a classroom and school-wide approach, you can provide your students with the tools they need to thrive, achieve and succeed. Through exploration of research, collaboration with peers, and hands-on practice with classroom strategies, educators and administrators will gain in-depth understanding of trauma-informed care at school. Our training guides schools through such topics as social and emotional learning as a curriculum, positive behavior interventions, daily mindfulness practice in the classroom and strategies to model emotional and self-regulation skills.

Revolutionizing Climate and Culture for Schools
4 hours
As happiness researcher, Shawn Achor says, “Happiness is one of the greatest competitive advantages you can give a brain” …raising creativity, test scores and productivity, as well as buffering against stress, anxiety, and depression. In this workshop, Kim Strobel, and Steve Bollar dive deep into understanding the underlying issues that prevent you from being able to shift your district, school or even your life. They give you a specific blueprint for increasing staff and student engagement, strategies, and tools to begin to make “the shift” happen, as well as Social and Emotional Wellbeing practices that truly transforms your schools. School Climate is how a school “feels.” It’s the relationships, attitudes, and overall perception of the school. School culture is the shared values, rules, belief patterns, teaching and learning approaches, behaviors, and relationships among or across the individuals. Both are essential to maximizing working and learning environments that help all succeed
